An unusually weak snowpack is cause for concern according to Avalanche Canada which is warning of a potential for increased avalanche risk in much of the province this week.
A number of areas in B.C. are facing these conditions including the Rockies, Columbias and Northwest.
Avalanche Canada is recommending careful planning and cautious terrain selection for recreational mountain users in and around these areas. Experienced local riders are being very cautious assessing conditions at this time.
Avalanche Canada is attributing the December 30th fatal avalanche in the northern Monashees to these type of conditions.
More snow, warming temperatures, or additional wind is expected to make the situation worse.
This combination of changing weather and improved access to slopes is also likely to increase risk of triggering snow and being caught in avalanches in the coming days and weeks.
