UPDATE: 9 year old BC girl found

UPDATE (6 p.m.): Makayla Estrada-Weber has been found in Bellingham, Washington.

Bellingham police have tweeted that officers are with the pair at a local church.

New Westminster police say Makayla Estrada-Weber had a custody visit with her mother Wilma Estrada on Jan. 22.

Police say they believe the 48-year-old mother then took her daughter, violating a court order, and crossed the border into the United States.

ORIGINAL STORY:

An Amber Alert has been issued for a B.C. girl.

The New Westminster Police Department started investigating a possible abduction at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday.

The mother of nine-year-old Makayla Estrada-Weber, Wilma Estrada, is believed to have taken her during a custody visit, violating a court order.

Detectives from the New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit took over the investigation and have determined that Estrada has entered the United States with her daughter.

The 48-year-old Estrada is believed to be driving a grey 2003 Toyota Corolla with the B.C. license plate number 228-MJT.

“At this point, we do not know the purpose of violating the court order, but we are working hard with our American partners to safely locate both mother and daughter,” said NWPD Media Relations Officer, Jeff Scott. “Our detectives have issued an Amber Alert in the United States, and anyone who has information about their whereabouts is asked to call us immediately.”

According to the Washington State Amber Alert, Estrada-Weber suffers from “selective mutism” and will only speak with specific people whom she trusts.

She is shy and it’s believed that she wouldn’t seek assistance from any stranger, even if she required help.

Estrada’s intentions with her daughter are unknown and police fear for the child’s safety.

If you see Wilma Estrada, Makayla Estrada-Weber or their vehicle, you’re asked to call 911 immediately.
