Social Worker

Average pay range: $19.23 to $46 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $32

Description:

Social workers collaborate with community groups and organizations to provide help and support for individuals or families in need. Jobs could vary from helping people develop skills and resolve personal issues to addressing broader problems such as poverty, unemployment and domestic violence. Social workers could be employed in schools, hospitals, correctional facilities, social service agencies, child welfare organizations, communities and Aboriginal band councils to name a few.

Requirements:

  • University degree in social work
  • Registered member of the B.C. College of Social Workers.

Industrial Electrician

Average Pay range: $21 and $45 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $35.

Description:

An Industrial electrician installs, services and repairs wiring, conduits, fixtures and other electrical devices and systems in an industrial or commercial setting. These electricians can be employed to work in factories, plants, mines, shipyards and other industrial businesses.

Requirements:

  • completion of a four-year apprenticeship

Post-Secondary Administrator

Average Pay range: $19.23 to $56.59 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $36.62.

Description:

Post-secondary administrators are tasked with managing the daily activities at a post-secondary institution, which could include academics, registration, record-keeping and operations.

Requirements:

  • Experience as a professor or instructor.
  • Registrars must have a bachelor’s degree in business administration
  • Administrators at vocational training schools need a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Civil Engineer

Average pay range: $25 to $63.26 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $36.05.

Description:

A civil engineer is typically tasked with designing, developing and managing a variety of construction projects, from highways and buildings to power stations and airports.

Requirements:

  • A two-year diploma in civil engineering or a closely related field for technologists

Computer Programmer and Interactive Media Developer

Average pay range: $20 to $52 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $35.

Description:

Computer programmers and interactive media developers are tasked with creating and integrating software for a variety of industries, from manufacturing and finance to video games and e-commerce.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree or a diploma in computer science or another discipline related to programming.

Software Engineers and Designers

Average pay range: $20 to $57.69 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $39.42.

Description:

Software engineers and designers develop, evaluate, test and maintain software and operating systems that make computers - or anything containing software - work. These workers could find employment either in the public or private sector.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer engineering, computer science or another related field
  • A designation from a professional engineering association.

Human Resources Manager

Average pay range: $22.85 to $60 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $40.87.

Description:

A human resources manager is in charge of an organization's human resources department. Jobs could include developing and implementing HR policies and procedures, resolving internal conflicts, hiring and firing employees, and managing relations between management and employees.

Requirements:

  • A degree in a field related to personnel management—business administration, commerce or human resources, for example.
  • Experience in managerial roles

Insurance, Real Estate and Financial Brokerage Managers

Average pay range: $20.70 to $61.54 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $43.27.

Description:

These managerial roles involve organizing and managing day-to-day activities to make sure operations run smoothly and overseeing a team of professionals.

Requirements:

  • A university degree or college diploma in business administration or economics
  • A license to sell insurance, real estate and financial products

Corporate Sales Manager

Average pay range: $18.67 to $62.50 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $36.06.

Description:

Corporate sales managers are tasked with directing and evaluating sales activities, training and managing staff, and working closely with clients.

Requirements:

  • Many positions require a degree or diploma in business or a related field.
  • Potential to begin as a sales representative and work your way up to become a manager

College Instructor

Average pay range: $20 to $53.85 an hour, with a median hourly wage of $34.05.

Description:

College instructors have a variety of duties, from helping structure course content relevant to student interests to teaching and evaluating students in a range of disciplines.

Requirements:

  • Typically need a master's or another advanced degree
  • A qualification to teach adults and work experience.

Lawyer

Pay range: The provincial median salary is $106,638 a year.

Description:

When we think of a lawyer we may typically think of people debating one another in a courtroom. However, lawyers usually spend the majority of their time researching and interviewing clients and witnesses outside of the courtroom. As well, lawyers are employed to offer legal advice and prepare legal documents.

Requirements:

  • Two or three years of undergraduate studies
  • A bachelor’s degree from a recognized law school.
  • Completion of the bar examinations
  • Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia.
