Osprey typically breed near fresh or salt water and build nests in trees, on poles and other structures during the spring and summer.
FortisBC launched an osprey nest management program after discovering that osprey could cause an array of problems through building nests on live power poles.
These problems included:
To prevent these issues from arising, FortisBC set up live cameras to observe when and where osprey are trying to build nests on power poles.
Now, if an osprey is observed trying to build a nest, a FortisBC crew will place orange cones on top of the pole. If the osprey manages to build a nest, a crew will safely remove the next and an alternative pole with a suitable nesting platform is provided.
Ultimately, the program is intended to protect birds from electrocution and improve electrical safety and reliability.
