BC Ferries reports record breaking year

Year-end results proved it was a record breaking year for BC Ferries.

According to a release from the ferry company, over the past year they have set all-time record for vehicles moved by their ships.

The number of foot passengers carried over the past year also increased to the highest total in 20 years.

All that traffic accounted for a total net-earnings of $59.9 million, ironically a decline from the previous year due bringing three new Salish Class ships for increased inter-island trips.

“Strong financial results are essential for us to improve the customer experience in a variety of ways. This performance helps us to increase service, invest in new vessels and terminal infrastructure, offer discounts and minimize borrowing,” Mark Collins, B.C. Ferries’ President and CEO, said in a statement.

“Robust earnings allow us to operate a sustainable coastal ferry system that will serve our customers for generations to come. We also use net earnings to deliver an improving customer experience with modernized information technology systems and more environmentally friendly ships.”

The increase in traffic can be attributed to a boost in sailings, BC Ferries says they provided 1,190 more round trips compared with the year before
