(UPDATE: Mar. 18, 2018)

The BC SPCA says that they have the owner of a dog with a deeply embedded collar.

The SPCA requested assistance from the public in locating the owner after discovering the dog, who they are calling Rusty, on a forest service road near Creston.

Rusty was brought to the BC SPCA’s East Kootenay branch on Mar. 10. The owner has not been publicly identified, but the SPCA says they are continuing with the investigation.

Rusty is not available for adoption at this time and remains in the care of the SPCA.

Upon arriving at the East Kootenay branch, he did receive veterinary treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The 1-year-old shar-pei/Labrador cross was brought to the BC SPCA’s East Kootenay Branch in Cranbrook on March 10 by Good Samaritans who found him on the Carrol Creek forest service road between Yahk and Creston.

“We immediately rushed Rusty for veterinary treatment,” said Christy King, manager of the East Kootenay SPCA. “He has had surgery to remove necrotic tissue from his neck and is doing well. We are hopeful he will make a full recovery.”

The BC SPCA has opened an investigation into the case and is asking anyone who may know the dog or his owners to please contact the BC SPCA animal cruelty hotline at 1-855-622-7722.
