BC climber rescued by helicopter after fall knocked him unconscious for 30 minutes

As they often are, North Shore Rescue (NSR) crews were busy over the long weekend.

Members were called out into the field multiple times to assist outdoor enthusiasts who ended up in tricky situations while adventuring in the North Shore mountains.

Monday was the busiest day for NSR crews, who were already responding to an injured hiker near the Eagle Bluffs area when they received a call for mutual aid from Lions Bay Search and Rescue.

NSR was asked to assist in rescuing a seriously-injured climber, who was stuck in a perilous spot on the East Lion after solo scrambling to the summit.

“On his unhelmeted descent from the summit, he fell - a significant distance - and was apparently unconscious for (around) 30 minutes,” NSR explained in a Facebook post.

“When he came to, he had miraculously been stopped by some shrubs on a ledge. Upon regaining consciousness, he called 911.”

NSR sent a crew to the area in a Talon helicopter and a mountain rescue tech was winched a few metres above the subject to set up an anchor.

Another rescue tech, who is an emergency room physician, was then winched in and provided medical care and packaging.

Once ready, those crews were picked up and the subject was flown back to the NSR station at Capilano Gate, where he was handed over to paramedics.

You can see footage from the East Lion rescue in the comment section of the NSR’s most-recent Facebook post, which can be found here.
