BC couple’s window smashed in dramatic rescue - of a toy dog

Blake and Marla Handley would never leave their beloved pets in a hot car.

The married couple from Victoria, B.C. was actually leaving a SPCA donor’s dinner when they realized the window of their car’s back door had been smashed.

“An older couple approached us and asked if we had noticed what happened to our window,” explained Blake Handley.

“They said they had seen a dog in the back of our car and after tapping the glass and shaking the car, the animal still wasn't responding.”

The older couple in the parking lot then proceeded to smash the Handley’s car window, which is when they discovered Rory.

But why was a large toy dog in the back seat?

After the Handley’s first dog passed away, they found a rather real replica of their bearded collie at a thrift store.

The couple purchased the toy dog and named it Rory after their previous pet. The toy dog has now been riding in the car’s back seat for 18 years.

“I honestly applaud them, they did the wrong thing for the right reason, they also stayed around and owned up to it,” said Handley.

“They were concerned about an animal and we care so much about animals. We wouldn’t have broken the window, but we would have seen to it.”

Having just left an SPCA sponsored dinner, Handley had the opportunity to speak with the SPCA’s manager who cautioned against any vigilantism.

“People should be going through the police as well as the SPCA crisis line and they have efficient ways of taking care of it,” said Handley.

The ironic situation likely won’t happen again, Rory now has big tags that make it clear he is loved but not alive.
