BC police officer sent to hospital after getting assaulted by man with knives

Police in Southern BC were dealing with all they could last week, this time with an aggressive knife-wielder in Trail.

According to RCMP, on Oct. 9 at 6:27 pm, officers were called to the 2000 block of Daniel Street for a disturbance. Upon arrival, police found a man with two outstanding arrest warrants who immediately became aggressive when confronted.

"The man immediately became aggressive toward the officer and walked toward him while brandishing two large knives," said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. "The man refused to drop the knives or comply with the direction provided by the officer."

In order to stop the man, the officer shot his taser. This gave him time to get the knives out of the equation.

The man was then subdued by the two officers on scene. He was brought to the cells at the Trail RCMP detachment.

During the violent arrest struggle, both officers received injuries. One of the involved police members was sent to the hospital for a serious cut to the hand and remains off-duty.

"This was a very serious incident, which the two officers successfully resolved. They demonstrated their bravery and dedication to keeping Trail safe with quick action and thinking. Our thought are with our injured officer as he recovers."

The suspect made his first court appearance on Thursday. He faced charges of Assaulting a Police Officer, Possessing a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Resisting a Peace Officer.
