Current target date to reopen Hwy 99 is Sunday

There could be a domestic passage for vehicles to travel between the Lower Mainland and BC Interior by the end of the weekend.

In fact, there could be two.

The District of Lillooet revealed today that Hwy 99, or the Duffey Lake Road, has been assessed by a geotechnical engineer and the clearing process has begun.

“The current estimated target opening is Sunday, Nov. 21,” the District said, adding that it is subject to change based on conditions.

It’s welcome news for many British Columbians looking for a route between the Lower Mainland and the rest of the province.

Although it’s far from the shortest route, the link between Pemberton and Lillooet would at least connect a province that has basically been split in two since Monday.

The other major link between the Lower Mainland and Interior that could open by the end of the weekend, or shortly after, is Hwy 3.

On Tuesday, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming that said Hwy 3 “looks to be the quickest route to reopen.”

“We will update people on what this route looks like and whether it can be reopened by the end of the weekend.”

There hasn’t been much chatter about that since Fleming’s comments on Tuesday, although the section of Hwy 3 east of Princeton has reopened, but the stretch through Manning Park still needs work.

Provincial officials are set to provide the latest updates on BC’s catastrophic flooding situation, which will include the latest of highway closures, at 3:30 pm PT.
