A gold medal from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics is available on the auction site RR Auction.
The iconic piece of sporting and Canadian history is on the block with an estimated worth of $65,000 CAD.
“The front features embossed Olympic rings against a unique stylized pattern inspired by pods of orca, or killer whales,” states the company.
“Among the most beautiful and innovative of all Olympic medals, those created for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games feature Canadian aboriginal art and a unique undulating form, the first Olympic medal to have such a design.”
The back of the medal features the Inukshuk emblem of the 2010 Vancouver Games and lists the XXI Olympic Winter Games and the sport of Men’s Freestyle Skiing.
However, the athlete selling the gold piece has asked to remain anonymous.
It’s the first time, to the company’s knowledge, that a Vancouver medal has ever been available for auction.
As of Tuesday evening, July 16, the highest bid sat at $26,000.
