Massive ‘fried egg’ jellyfish spotted off the Sunshine Coast in BC

A bizarre and oddly adorable ocean creature was spotted off the Sunshine Coast this week.

Ocean Wise shared a photo, which was taken by Donna Harrison, of a very unique jellyfish.

It’s known as egg yolk, or fried egg jellyfish, due to its yellow centre and transparent body.

According to Ocean Wise, they can grow tentacles that are up to six metres long.

The scientific name is Phacellophora camtschatica, and it is found in Eastern Pacific waters from the Gulf of Alaska to Chile, the Eastern Pacific and the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
