Nearly $5M will be spent to build new bus shelters across BC

The latest investment in British Columbia’s public transit system will help improve safety for riders across the province.

It was announced today that the provincial and federal governments would each spend $1.9 million to install 150 new and refitted bus shelters in BC.

Another $986,000 will be provided to the project by municipal governments through BC Transit.

"Bus shelters are important transit infrastructure that provide people a safe and dry place to wait for the bus,” said Rob Fleming, BC’s minister of transportation and infrastructure.

“We are happy to join with our federal and local government partners on supporting new and improved bus shelters in communities throughout BC, helping to encourage more people to choose public transit and making our neighbourhoods more affordable, accessible and inclusive."

According to a Government of BC release, the shelters will improve both the quality and safety of bus travel in our province, thanks to weather-specific upgrades and better lighting and seating.

With increased accessibility standards in mind, the new bus shelters will also allow for more people to access public transit.

"New and refitted bus shelters will improve the day-to-day commuting experience for public transit users,” said Patrick Weiler, a BC MP.

“It's great to see federal funding go towards public transit in my home province and towards supporting cleaner and better connected communities."

Both the federal and provincial funding for this project is being provided through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan.
