Overnight earthquake in the Georgia Strait felt by people in Vancouver, Victoria

Emergency Info BC says no damage or injuries are expected after an earthquake rattled British Columbia’s coastal region early this morning.

The quake happened around 2 am in the Georgia Strait, around 20 kilometres southwest of Richmond between the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island.

There are conflicting reports of the earthquake’s magnitude from various agencies.

Earthquakes Canada says it measured at 3.5, Emergency Info BC reports it at 3.8 and the US Geological Survey claims it was 3.9.

Whatever the exact measurement was, it was felt by many in the Vancouver and Victoria areas.

Over 400 people have submitted reports to Earthquakes Canada saying they felt weak or light intensity shakes when the tremor hit at 2:08 am.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the earthquake’s epicentre was far underground at a depth of 65 km.

It's the second earthquake to be felt by residents of BC's south coast in just over a week following a magnitude 4.0 tremor last Thursday morning.
