Police ask residents not to sell family members online after peculiar incident in BC

Police in the Kootenays dealt with a very peculiar situation earlier this month when an online joke turned bad.

According to Trail and Greater District RCMP, on Aug. 1, a local woman was surfing the internet when she saw an interesting listing. The 21-year-old woman saw that one of her family members was trying to sell her online for $50,000.

Investigators spoke with the woman's family member who claimed it was only a joke. The post was then immediately removed from social media.

Police are now asking the public to refrain from selling family members online.

"In all seriousness, oftentimes such matters are brought to the attention of law enforcement and can unnecessarily tie up much needed front line first responders," said Sg.t Mike Wicentowich.
