Police shut down illegal music event with over 100 attendees in Southern BC

Police in Southern BC had to be cautious when dealing with a number of people disobeying public health orders.

According to RCMP, on Sept. 3, officers in Squamish were called to assist Natural Resources when they heard reports of an illegal music event being hosted at a site in the community.

"Natural Resource Officers had given the organizer notice under the Provincial Land Act to stop using Crown land and restore the land to satisfactory condition," wrote police.

"The organizer decided to proceed with the event that included about 100-150 people and 50 cars in a small recreation site. Under the Land Act provisions, Natural Resource Officers seized a number of generators used for the event."

Officers had to issue numerous Land Act notices following the event.

"In 2021 we have seen an unprecedented amount of music events with stages and multiple power sources in our backcountry," said S/Sgt. Gareth Bradley. "Our preference is to obtain compliance through a measured approach that includes awareness and education, however, if people do not comply, we move to enforcement that can include seizing event equipment."

Anyone who witnesses anything illegal in their community should contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
