The famous McBarge is about to host guests for the first time since Expo ‘86

After a long 31 years, people will once again climb aboard the McBarge next weekend.

The parties behind the revival of the old boat are hosting a Bring Back McBarge Kickoff event on Saturday, October 21st.

After floating unused for years, the McBarge was finally sold and moved to Maple Ridge in 2015, where it currently resides.

Since then, recovery work has been underway on the Expo ‘86 attraction, with hopes of turning it into a Deep Discovery Centre.

“The vision is to create a major BC attraction showcasing the history, technology, stories and experiences offered in the Pacific,” explains those behind the McBarge’s revival.

The end goal for the Deep Discovery Centre is to unlock the Pacific’s “potential to assist mankind with the harvesting of food, minerals, energy and water to an increasing global population.”

To that end, the team includes undersea technology pioneer, and a recent recipient of the Order of Canada, Phil Nuytten.

You’ll need a ticket to get to the October 21st event on the McBarge, but organizers promise entertainment, stories from those who experienced barge during Expo ‘86 and much more.

For the full story of the McBarge, you can watch the Abandoned series on the boat below, which has been watched over two million times to this point.
