Trip to grocery store turns into $1M windfall for BC couple

Most people’s wallets feel a little lighter when they leave the grocery store, but that certainly wasn’t the case for Robert and Christine Loewen.

The Maple Ridge couple was on a trip to the store a few months back when they discovered that they had won a life-changing $1-million prize from the Lotto Max draw on Aug. 6, 2024.

“I was in Fifth Avenue Grocery,” recalled Robert. “I said ‘No!’ and scanned again. I was excited and called Christine over to look.”

The Loewen’s had no immediate ideas for the prize money and their first step was to talk with a financial advisor.

At the time they claimed the prize money from the BCLC, they had still not shared the news of their win with anyone.

Well, the secret is out now and Christine says the feeling of winning a seven-figure lottery prize is “unreal.”

“We’re still in disbelief,” she noted. “We haven’t slept!”

The winning ticket was purchased at the same place it was scanned – Fifth Avenue Grocery in Maple Ridge.
