A vehicle incident at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal yesterday afternoon caused a significant delay and sent one person to hospital.
A vehicle drove off the upper deck of the ship and fell about 30 feet.
According to a BC Ferries spokesperson, the incident occurred at 12:30 pm yesterday aboard the Coastal Renaissance. The ship had recently arrived from Duke Point, and was completing its routine discharge at the terminal.
The last vehicle to be unloaded off the upper car deck drove off the ship, accelerated rapidly and smashed through a concrete wall.
The vehicle fell to the lower holding compound of the terminal, landing on its roof.
BC Ferries said that the lone occupant of the vehicle was conscious at the scene, and was transported to hospital for assessment.
“Safety is BC Ferries first priority. This incident is currently under investigation to determine why it occurred. We are not going to speculate on the cause,” BC Ferries added.
Ambulance, police and the fire department attended the scene. No injuries to other passengers or crew were reported.
The Coastal Renaissance moved over to another berth at the terminal and resumed operation.
