You can go to the gym and workout, but no fitness classes

You can go to the gym and do your own workout.

But all group fitness and yoga classes have been cancelled until April 19.

When new COVID provincial health orders were announced yesterday there was some confusion that gyms would be closed except for workouts with a personal trainer.

Now that gyms have had a day to sort everything out, it's much clearer as to what is and isn't allowed.

</who>New provincial health orders mean all group fitness classes are cancelled, but you can still go to the gym to lift weights and run on the treadmill.

"Gym remains open for individual workouts (including weights and treadmills)," reads an 'important member update' from Global Fitness & Racquet Centre in Kelowna.

"Members are to stay 6 feet apart, social distance, not share equipment, no spotting and wear a mask when not working out."

The notice goes on to say: "Fitness and yoga classes are cancelled until April 19. Personal training one-on-one can be scheduled."

As well, Global's indoor tennis and pickleball courts remain open for singles play only.

Squash and racquetball remain open for drills only, no games, and players must stay 8 feet apart.

Junior programs for those under 22 years of age are still scheduled.

At Team Fitness in the Landmark 6 building, the supervisor reiterated you can come to the gym to do your own workout or meet a trainer for a one-on-one session.

She also said all gyms where people are working out have to have staff on site.

The crackdown on gyms is part of stronger restrictions in BC in reaction to rising COVID infections, effective today to April 19.

Indoor religious gatherings have been suspended, restaurants and pubs can offer patio seating and take out, no dine-in service, and Whistler Blackcomb ski resort is closed until April 19.

As well, the province recommends you work from home if possible, keep your kids home from school if they show any signs of illness, get tested for novel coronavirus if you or anyone in your family feels sick and avoid all non-essential travel.
