Halloween is a great time to pig out on chocolate and candy, but that produces a lot of packing that usually ends up in landfills.
This year, there’s another way.
People can collect their candy wrappers, chip bags and any other flexible plastic packaging and bring it into any London Drugs location.
They’ll be collected and sent to Merlin Plastics, a post-consumer processing company in the Lower Mainland.
There, they’ll be used for research and development as the company continues to develop a commercially viable process for repurposing these common but tough-to-process items.
“We want to help British Columbians celebrate Halloween with a bit less waste by making one simple suggestion,” said Maury McCausland, retail operations sustainability specialist at London Drugs.
“Instead of throwing out your candy wrappers and chip bags, bring them to London Drugs.”
StatsCan numbers show that more than $550 million worth of cookies, confectionary and snack foods were sold across Canada last October and a large chunk of that is Halloween candy.
That’s why London Drugs’ Other Flexible Plastic Packaging is part of RecycleBC’s new take-back program, trying to find a solution to reuse or recycle flexible plastic packaging.
It’s not just at Halloween, however, and London Drugs runs the program year round.
