The Trans-Canada Highway has fully shut down east of Golden.
An 11-day extended full closure of the route to accommodate work on the Kicking Horse Canyon Phase 4 Project began at noon Monday.
The highway will remain closed through the upcoming Truth and Reconciliation Day long weekend, but will reopen at noon on Friday, Oct. 6, in time for the Thanksgiving long weekend.
This is the second extended full closure of Hwy 1 in as many weeks, as crews make the final push to get Phase 4 completed.
“These closures are needed to complete construction activities that cannot be performed in the presence of traffic or during shorter interruptions,” explained a release from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
“The focus during these closures will be on preparing the new westbound lanes, currently under construction, for traffic this fall.”
As is always the case when this section of Hwy 1 between Golden and Castle Junction is closed, traffic will be detoured through Radium via Hwy 93S and Hwy 95.
The alternate route adds around 90 minutes of travel time.
The highway will be fully open over the Thanksgiving long weekend, starting at noon on Friday, Oct. 6, then the project will return to some daytime stoppages and overnight closures.
