Shuswap donkey refuge announces matching campaign for large expansion project

The Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge has announced a matching campaign to raise funds for their barn and infirmary expansion project which will house the senior donkeys in their care.

Located in Chase, the donkey refuge provides a safe and permanent home for neglected, abused or unwanted donkeys.

The registered charity has partnered with Sakura’s Hope Foundation to raise funds for the expansion project. Starting Oct. 1, the foundation will match up to $30,000 in donations.

According to a news release, the donkey refuge is working to add 2,800 square feet of interior barn space with new large stalls to provide more space for the large number of senior animals in their care.

They would also like to expand their infirmary and rehabilitation space by 1,200 square feet.

The original estimates for the construction was $120,000, however, inflation caused the estimate to increase to $150,000.

The refuge has been hard at work since April and has already raised over $100,000 through a combination of grant funding, private estate donations, t-shirt sales and many generous donations from our kind supporters.

“Currently we have over 100 donkeys in our care here at the Refuge property, and out in foster care as well. As the donkeys age, due to their backgrounds, they are more likely to develop chronic conditions that must be managed daily,” adds found, Shirley Mainprize.

“The average age of our donkeys is 29, and while many healthy donkeys can live to 50, we just try to give our donkeys as many happy and healthy years here as we can.”

Anything that is left over from this matching campaign will go towards medication and other care needs to the senior donkeys that live at the refuge.
