Sunday Social Connection: @kimjayweddings

Hey there! My name is Kim Jay and I'm a wedding and lifestyle photographer based in Victoria, BC. I've got a background in journalism, and I tend to take a documentary approach to storytelling. I have a passion for portraiture, so when I'm not shooting weddings, I'm creating interesting portraits. I love to travel, take part in festivals, and explore the outdoors. Currently, I'm dreaming up my next overseas adventure!

Why do you use Instagram?

It's a visual platform, perfect for showing off photos. I'm not a big writer, and Instagram focuses on imagery, so it just makes sense. It's also been a great way to connect with other people in the industry. I find that people are friendly and helpful, for the most past. I try and make genuine connections with others, rather than just trying to up my followers. It's all about interaction, so I'll ask people for tips for planning upcoming trips or just share some of my own ideas, and I've made some lasting friendships by just being open and inquisitive.

What will people see on your feed?

I've had a few accounts - @kimjayweddings is all about couples in love. It shares a glimpse into people's wedding day, or little snippets from connection sessions, where we hang out or go on an adventure and explore. I tend to attract more non-traditional couples and adventurous people. I love exploring with my clients!

@kimjayphoto is my portrait account. Each week I share a different photoshoot, featuring a passionate individual (typically women, it seems). I love playing with light and capturing intimate images, so lots of raw-ness on my feed.

Does your page have a specific style?

Definitely! I'm not big into overly posing my subjects. I want the images to feel real, rather than staged. So you get a documentary feel in general. I tend towards intimate moments and genuine emotions rather than perfectly posed images. I'm a moment driven photographer.

Favourite Instagram accounts to follow?

Oh, there are so many!

@alessioalbi is an amazing portrait artist. I get a lot of inspiration from his work.

Locally, I love the wedding work that @lukeliablephoto creates. He has a very cinematic feel, which I am drawn towards.

How do you decide on your location for shoots?

The light and the vibe!

I do lots of location scouting to find good spots. When I'm out for a walk, or a hike, I'm always on the look out for interesting backgrounds and pockets of light. I've got a list going, and then refer to that when I have a shoot.

Biggest Instagram moment?

A fella came up to me on the ferry one time and said he loved my work and had been following me for a while. It was nice of him to go out of his way to make me feel valued. He is a very talented musician himself, and part of a popular quartet. Check them out - @cascadiaquartet.

Favourite hashtags?

I don't really follow hashtags, but I do use them to promote locations I have shot at.

Why do you follow VictoriaNow?
