University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus (UBCO) students will be paying more for their U-Passes next year due to a referendum held on November 4th and 5th.
Students were asked to vote for or against a proposed increase on the fare.
The unofficial results have come in and 84 per cent of student voters supported the increase. Votes are considered unofficial until ratified by the Student Union Board. “We are extremely pleased with the level of student engagement in this year’s referendum,” said Jerry Dombowsky, Regional Programs Manager for the City of Kelowna. “The votes in favour demonstrates that the U-Pass is a highly-valued program that students want to see continue in the years ahead.”
922 students out of the 1,102 voted yes, which is being considered a record turnout for UBCO.
The last U-Pass rate increase was in 2011. Rates will increase to $63 a semester in 2016.
