New mural done by UBCO students will be unveiled in the Mission this week

In recent weeks, fourth year visual arts students at UBC Okanagan have been working hard to create a new mural in the Mission.

The mural, on the corner of Pandosy Street and West Avenue, will be unveiled and celebrated on Thursday.

Instructor David Doody, who supervises and guides the students alongside co-facilitator Jorden Doody, said the project provides a great deal of value to the UBCO students involved.

He noted that students gain the experience of working with a diverse range of technologies like projectors and mechanical lifts, while also learning a variety of paint applications and techniques common to mural painting.

“Murals are great ways for artists to collaborate with other artists and non-artists to create a visually encapsulating culture and community,” Doody said.

This is the third year that the course has been offered at UBCO and this year’s mural continues the theme of the previous two murals in downtown Kelowna – sensitive habitats and ecosystems in the Okanagan.

Each mural depicts local flora and fauna to help bring awareness to some of the sensitive habitats in the area.

“Our design this year features a large western painted turtle, showing it as the sun sets in a very calm surreal setting,” explained Doody.

The mural will be officially unveiled at 2820 Pandosy St. on Thursday at 5 pm and the public is invited to be there.

Both David and Jorden Doody will be on hand with a number of students to answer any questions.
