A body has been discovered in an abandoned building after a fire on Sunday night.

RCMP in Nanaimo say that an adult was found dead in a building located at 85 Wallace Street after a fire was reported just after midnight.

An officer on patrol first saw smoke billowing from the building and reported it. Fire crews were on scene within minutes and managed to contain the fire and extinguish it. While searching for victims, one person was found.

Several individuals were located nearby and were safely escorted from the scene. The BC Coroners Service was advised and the building was secured to allow fire and forensic investigators to return at a later time to examine the scene and obtain any potential evidence.

“While it is only early in the investigation and considerable investigation is required, there is nothing to suggest at this time that foul play is involved,” said Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Investigators say they are also aware of several incidents in the recent months where marginalized persons have been found sheltering in the building and on the property.

The deceased has not been identified to date and an autopsy is expected at some time in the near future.
