Bus driver assaulted and woman spat on after man in Vernon bus station told to stop smoking

A bus driver was sent to hospital after being attacked by a man he told to stop smoking.

Mounties in Vernon said the BC Transit employee suffered non-life threatening injuries during the assault this morning.

It happened at about 8:45 am at the bus station.

The driver, who is 59, spotted a man smoking on one of the benches when he pulled in.

Because smoking is forbidden in the station, the driver got out of his bus and approached the man to speak to him.

At that point, the smoker grabbed and assaulted the driver.

He also spat on a woman who attempted to intervene.

“Our officers arrived on scene within minutes and located the man a short distance away,” said Cpl Tania Finn.

“Police arrested him without further incident.”

A 24-year-old from Vernon remains in police custody.

Mounties are continuing their investigation.
