Okanagan police dog tracks down missing 82-year-old woman with Alzheimers

An Okanagan police dog helped track down a missing senior who wandered away from her home over the weekend.

On Saturday, just before 1 pm, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP received a report that an 82-year-old woman had gone missing in the Spallumcheen area.

The woman, who is diagnosed with Alzheimers, wandered away from her rural property on Chamberlain Road, which is northwest of Armstrong.

Given the woman’s medical condition, an extensive ground search was started and the Police Dog Service (PSD) team was dispatched to track her down.

After about two hours, PSD Mavrick found the woman in a heavily wooded area, uninjured.

She was safely brought back to her home.

The RCMP call the PSD team “exceptional” given their ability to track down missing persons.

“They area an incredibly important part of our team and provide vital assistance to our frontline operations, particularly in situations like this where they can help us find a lost or missing person quickly,” says Cst. Chris Terleski.
