Police tase and arrest Okanagan man, 27, after string of assaults at Kal Beach

Police had their hands full on Sunday night dealing with a man who allegedly assaulted a number of people at Kal Beach.

The RCMP was called around 8 pm and advised by several people about an altercation between two men, which led to one man being knocked unconscious and into the lake.

Witnesses were able to help the victim out of the water, while the suspect continued to allegedly assault other people on the pier and beach.

When officers arrived and attempted to arrest the man for assault, the 27-year-old Vernon man refused to comply and fled on foot toward the train trestle over Kalamalka Road.

“The suspect was in a highly agitated state, standing at the top of the trestle and was screaming at police that he would kill them,” said Cpl. Tania Finn.

“The officers on scene attempted to deescalate the situation verbally and encouraged the man to give himself up peacefully.”

Given the dangerous location and the suspect's high level of aggression, officers decided to use a taser to subdue the man and take him into custody without further incident.

He remains in custody as he awaits a court appearance.

One of the victims was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Anyone with further information on this incident is asked to contact Cst. Stephanie Buchanan at the Vernon RCMP by calling 250-545-7171.
