Raw sewage discharged into north arm of Okanagan Lake

The Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB-EOC) is reporting that a previous report of raw sewage being discharged into the north end of Okanagan Lake has been assessed and results indicate that it is a combination of high organic material, (sewage) made up of grass, leaves, burlap, sand and dead animals. The OKIB-EOC will continue to monitor the area and to note that this algae bloom occurrence will be a common sight over the next week.

At this time there is no odour , but as the algae bloom becomes oxygenated a distinct sulphur odour will be released.

They are advising that people and pets

- Do not go into the water.

- Do not drink the water even if boiled as it will not reduce the risk.

- Do not let pets or livestock drink or have contact with the water.

- Do not eat fish or other marine live caught in water where there is a blue-green aglae bloom.
