The City of Victoria has enacted a bylaw that will reduce the speed limit on local streets from the current maximum of 50 kilometres per hour to 30 kilometres per hour.
The measure is aimed at creating a safer environment for drivers and pedestrians, as well as limiting the severity of collisions and accidents.
Speed limits of 50 kilometres per hour will remain in place on major roads which see over 1,000 vehicles per day, however, the new speed limits will affect smaller, residential streets that see far less traffic on a daily basis.
The bylaw will be enacted in stages by neighbourhood over the next two years, beginning this spring with the Hillside-Quadra neighbourhood, followed by the Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood in the fall and the Oaklands early next year.
You can learn more about the new bylaw at the City of Victoria’s website.
