Victoria celebrates Year of the Tiger with new zodiac crosswalk

A crosswalk in downtown Victoria got a fresh paint job to celebrate the Year of the Tiger.

A zodiac crosswalk now marks the entrance to Chinatown, at the intersection of Government Street and Fisgard Street.

Veteran city councillor Charlayne Thornton-Joe Explained in a tweet that three years ago, she was in Washington, DC and saw a zodiac crosswalk.

She asked staff “what it would take to do something similar” in Victoria.

“Since work was being done on that road anyway, it could be done without much cost or effort as part of the planned work. So today it was unveiled!” Thornton-Joe said.

The long-time councillor announced last week that she will not be seeking re-election this fall, but said that she would continue to work on the new Chinese Canadian Museum Fan Tan Alley exhibit.
