The Diamond Mountain housing development proposal made a lot of headlines, and so did it's rejection for rezoning in March by Kelowna City Council. Now it's back in the headlines for reasons that might surprise you. The City has purchased the property near the Glenmore Landfill for $11.9 Million. And what's in store for the property may also surprise you. City real estate manager Johannes Saufferer said there are no immediate plans to do anything at all.
With the deal, the city has acquired two properties totaling 182 acres. The purpose of the purchase is to add to the buffer the city already has around other sides of the landfill.
Saufferer said a nuisance analysis completed in 2017 showed the Diamond Mountain Lands could be impacted by the operations of the landfill in the future, so the purchase avoids that conflict.
"We figured it is a very wise investment," said Saufferer, "to make sure that the landfill can continue to operate in the way it does without having residential restrictions in the future."
