VIDEO: Kelowna raised film maker plans local debut

Born in Trail, raised in Kelowna and living in Edmonton, film maker Adam Scorgie is Canadian through and through. So it makes sense that he digs into the sport of hockey for the dramatic material for his documentary films. He took a very personal look at the players who took on the enforcer role in "Ice Guardians". Now he's planning for a Kelowna debut of his film "Making Coco", which celebrates the life and career of legendary goaltender Grant Fuhr.

"If you were not a Grant Fuhr fan before, you become a fan of the man afterwards," said Adam Scorgie, about the film, "because he's just so honest and transparent about how it all goes down."

Fuhr played goal for the Edmonton Oilers during the height of the team's dynasty. But it was a daunting task for Fuhr, because this was not a team that made its mark with defence.

"We have a clip of Coff saying in the film saying, "if you're expecting me to block shots, I ain't doing it," said Scorgie. And then there was Calgary Flames

Scorgie recalled Jim Peplinski's hilarious summation:

"Did Grant ever really see his defence other than when he was coming out of the dressing room?"

Adding to the appeal of the film is the dynamic style of play that Grant Fuhr brought to the game.

"A lot of people say he was the first true athlete in net," said Scorgie, "a really gifted athlete."

The film also digs into the year-long suspension Fuhr was handed after he admitted to having used drugs.

"You'll find details you've forgotten like how his suspension went down because it would not fly today."

Fuhr will be in Kelowna along with Scorgie for the debut at the Landmark Cinemas on June 16th.
