UPDATE: City of West Kelowna pauses tree deliveries due to Bylands COVID-19 outbreak

(UPDATE: March 31 @ 6:15 pm) - Around 24 hours ago, the City of West Kelowna announced that the 150 trees purchased through the inaugural Urban Re-Leaf Program would now be delivered.

The move was made in an effort to practice proper social distancing and avoid a large group of people congregating in one area to pick up their new trees.

However, the program has now been put on pause after Interior Health announced today that there was an outbreak of COVID-19 cases at Bylands Nurseries Ltd. in West Kelowna.

The City has chosen to take all precautionary measures and pause tree delivery through the Urban Re-Leaf Program.

If you purchased a tree, you're asked to contact the City with delivery information, including proof of purchase, name, home delivery address and species details.

You can email operations@westkelownacity.ca or info@westkelownacity.ca or call one of 778-797-8849 or 778-797-1000.

Staff will follow up in the coming weeks with more information about the program's future for this year.

(UPDATE: March 30 @ 7:30 pm) - The City of West Kelowna has changed up their game plan with regards to the inaugural Urban Re-Leaf Program.

Originally, the 150 residents who purchased trees were expected to pick them up from the City on April 4, but now they'll all be delivered to each purchaser's home.

The change was made as the City tries to respect social distancing guidelines and gathering size limits put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

(Original story: March 1 @ 1:30 pm) - If you’re looking to spice up your yard a bit, the City of West Kelowna has the tree for you.

The City’s inaugural Urban Re-Leaf Program launches on Monday, March 2, and it’ll give residents the opportunity to purchase a tree for $60 to plant in their yard.

Residents can pre-purchase one of 150 trees, which come in five different varieties and are all eight-to-10 feet tall in 10-gallon pots.

You’ll have the choice between autumn blaze maple, toba hawthorn, sunburst honey locust, muckle plum or pekin tree lilac.

Once you purchase a tree, you can pick it up between 9 am and noon on Saturday, April 4 at the gravel lot next to Mount Boucherie Recreation Complex.

The new program, which the City of Kelowna has been doing for a few years now, provides plenty of benefits, such as:

  • Improving air quality.
  • Mitigating climate change through absorbing carbon dioxide.
  • Water conservation through absorbing rainfall and reducing runoff.
  • Energy conservation from shading.
  • Economic benefits associated with attractive tree cover and landscaping.
