WKFR crews prevent car blaze from spreading to nearby apartments Friday evening

A Friday evening car fire turned into a close call for an apartment building in West Kelowna.

Just before 6 pm, West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded to a report of alarms ringing at 4215 Gellatly Rd South.

The call was then upgraded to a structure fire and upon arrival, crews found a car fully involved with heavy smoke in the underground parkade.

“The fire triggered the building fire suppression system and overhead sprinklers held the fire until WKFR crews could fully extinguish the car and prevent the fire from extending into the large, multi-story building,” wrote WKFR.

All residents in the building were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Individuals were then allowed to return to their units once there was no further danger.

The car was a total loss and there were minor damages to the parkade.

WKFR responded with the RCMP, Fortis, BC Hydro and the BC Ambulance Service.
