UPDATE: Peachland declares local state of emergency

(UPDATE: July 20, 2018 @ 12:06 a.m.) - Mayor Cindy Fortin declared a state of emergency for 596 properties in Peachland early this morning.

The approximately 1,490 residents living within this large area of Peachland, south of Princeton Avenue east to Highway 97, should be prepared to leave their homes on short notice for an extended period of time due to the potential threat from wildfires burning south of the municipality.

All previously issued Evacuation Orders and Alerts remain in effect. For a detailed list of the properties affected, click here.

All previously issued Evacuation Orders and Alerts remain in effect. Earlier this evening three properties within the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area (303, 305 and 307 Log Chute Road) were placed on Evacuation Order.

An Emergency Support Services reception centre is set up at the Lakeview Heights Baptist Church, 2630 Alhambra Drive in West Kelowna to help affected residents. Residents that are out of their homes must report to the reception centre to receive any assistance and lodging.

Mayor Cindy Fortin announced on Facebook that she will be signing a local state of emergency for Peachland due to the increased winds and the inherent surge in fire activity.

"I will now be signing a local state of emergency as the winds have seriously caused the fires to flare up," said Fortin.

"Please remain calm. This is not a time for Peachlanders to panic, but to pull together, as I'm proud to see so many of you have already done."

She added that many currently on evacuation alert, including properties on Thorne Rd., Hardy St. and Antlers Beach mobile home park, may be forced to vacate their homes.

Properties south of Princeton Ave. will be placed on evacuation alert.
