Wildfire at Sooke Potholes now 188 hectares and still burning out of control

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has provided a new size update for the Old Man Lake wildfire at Sooke Potholes Regional Park.

The fire is now estimated to be 188 hectares. It was said to be 169 hectares yesterday.

It is still classified as out of control, and a smokey skies bulletin has been issued.

Wildfire smoke is expected to impact nearby communities for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Smoke levels vary across the southern half of the province and the southern tip of Vancouver Island because of changing wind conditions.

BCWS says that crews and aviation resources are actioning the south and north flanks of the fire, and there has been incremental fire growth on the east flank, which is steep and difficult to access. Aviation resources are supporting efforts in these areas.

Officials are concerned about safety risks for crews due to falling rock and debris in the steeper terrain.

“Safety of our staff and crews is our highest priority. We are continuing to respond to this incident based on safe, workable objectives.”

The closures put in place by the Capital Regional District (CRD) remain in place.

Visitors are asked to avoid accessing these areas through other regional or provincial parks.
