West Kelowna Warriors Douse Smoke Eaters

About to embark on a seven-game road trip, the West Kelowna Warriors made the most of home ice on Tuesday at Royal LePage Place.

Getting goals from seven different players, the Warriors cruised to an 8-1 win over the visiting Trail Smoke Eaters to move into second place in the Interior Division of the B.C. Hockey League.

Jonathan Desbiens scored his team-leading 30th goal, while other West Kelowna markers came from Bryan Basilico, Nicholas Rutigliano and Kyle Marino.

Matthew Greenfield gave up the lone Trail goal to Harlan Orr and stopped 17 of 18 shots he faced in the first two periods before being replaced in the third by Shane Farkas, an affiliate player from the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Penticton. Voted the most valuable player at the recent Kelowna International Elite Midget Tournament, Farkas stopped all 17 shots he faced.

West Kelowna, two points up on the third-place Salmon Arm Silverbacks — who have two games in hand — took a 3-1 lead in the first period and added four unanswered goals in the second.

The Warriors begin their extended road trip on Friday when they travel to Cowichan to take on the Capitals. They’re in Powell River on Saturday and in Chilliwack on Sunday. Other BCHL stops are in Coquitlam, Trail (two games) and Penticton. The team returns to Royal LePage on Feb. 13 when they play host to the Langley Rivermen.
