The UBC Okanagan Heat were one set away from upending the Trinity Western Spartans, but couldn’t seal the deal and fell 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 15-10) in the battle for No. 1 in CIS women’s volleyball on Friday in Langley.

The five-set loss dropped the No. 2 Heat’s Canada West Conference record to 17-2, while the Spartans improved to 18-1. The two top-ranked teams meet again on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

The Heat raced out to a (5-1) lead in the first set and never trailed. After TWU closed the gap to three points, at (24-21), a Heat block finished the set in favour of the visitors. The win marked the first time ever that UBCO had taken a set from the Spartans at the LEC in Canada West league play.

However UBCO rallied and took a 16-15 edge at the technical timeout. The Spartans went up again (22-17), only to see the Heat respond and even the set (22-22). However, TWU, who hit (.207) in the set, tallied three of the last four points take the set.

The third set looked to be going UBCO’s way early as the visitors took a 15-11 lead before going up 20-16. But with the Heat up (23-20), the Spartans roared back, scoring five straight points to win the set 25-23. Despite 15 service errors through three sets, the Spartans held a 2-1 lead going to the fourth set.

It was all Heat early in the fourth, as UBCO went up 5-0 before extending its lead to 11-4 after a TWU service error. The Spartans closed the gap to three points on four different occasions, but that was as close as they could get.

With the Heat up (23-20), a Festival kill and a Spartans error gave UBCO the set and sent the match to a fifth.

A Carpentier kill finished the set and the match.

The Heat, coming off an historic effort a week earlier in which they earned a sweep of UBC for the first time in program history, were without two starters — middle Katy Klomps and outside hitter, Michelle Jakszuk — in the lineup for the second straight match due to injury and illness.

In men’s action on Friday the host Spartans (10-9) swept the UBCO Heat 3-0 (21-25, 15-25, 14-25) to drop to 3-16 on the season.

On set point, Blake Scheerhoorn of the Spartans tallied his fourth kill of the night to finish the set at (25-21).

The Spartans scored the first four points of the second set and rolled from there. The Heat, who was held to a (.080) hitting percentage in the set, got within one point, at (6-5), but the Spartans pulled away shortly thereafter. A Ryan Sclater kill gave TWU a (20-12) lead before Adam Schriemer ended the set with a kill of his own at (25-15).

With momentum on their side and a boisterous crowd behind them, the Spartans opened a quick lead (7-2) lead in the third set and maintained control throughout.

The two teams meet again on Saturday.
