Four junior rowers from the Kelowna Rowing Club surpassed expectations at the recent Nelson Sprint Regatta.
Nicole Samuelson, a 16-year-old veteran rower, led her teammates, Jocelyn Carmichael, Ethan Frigon and Bryce Manders to impressive results.
All of the juniors competed in multiple events throughout the regatta, rowing sprints on a 1,000-metre open-water course that included two to six boats per race.
The KRC rowers’ accomplishments were more significant when considering that at most regattas athletes compete in only one or two events. Each of Kelowna juniors entered three to five races.
Some of the more notable finishes included a first place by Manders and Frigon, who joined forces with two Vernon rowers in the junior men’s quad race. Samuelson and Carmichael cruised to a first-place finish in their women’s junior doubles heat.
Samuelson also placed second in the junior women’s single event while Carmichael and her father, Bob, combined with Manders and his mother, Leslie, to compete in the very competitive open mixed quad race and placed an impressive third.
Although the rowing season is coming to an end, the KRC junior development program is always looking for new recruits. The KRC welcomes males and females of all ages and abilities for recreational or competitive rowing.
