Co-hosts overshadowed on opening day of senior A volleyball tourney in Kelowna

The three Central Okanagan teams took a back seat to the White Rock Christian Warriors on opening day at the B.C. School Sports provincial senior A girls volleyball tournament.

Ranked No. 2 going into the 16-team tournament, White Rock swept the opposition in power-pool play on Thursday at Immaculata Regional High School and will be the No. 1 seed when championship playoff action begins on Friday.

<who>Photo Credit: Lorne White/KelownaNow </who>The Warriors opened with a 2-0 victory over No. 4-ranked Aberdeen Hall Gryphons and followed up with two-game sweeps of co-hosts Kelowna Christian School Knights and Immaculata Mustangs, ranked No. 1 and 3 respectively.

Immaculata won two of three matches in pool play, upsetting KCS for the first time this season with a 2-1 victory in their first match and defeating Aberdeen 2-0. Meanwhile, Kelowna Christian’s only win came against Aberdeen.

<who>Photo Credit: Lorne White/KelownaNow </who>The first round of the championship draw will see White Rock playing Centennial Christian School of Terrace at 10 a.m. on Friday, while Immaculata will meet the No. 15 Carver Christian Phoenix of Burnaby in the round of 16 starting at noon on home court.

Aberdeen meets No. 13 Vernon Christian School Royals at noon at Kelowna Christian School while KCS will begin the playoff round against the Chetwynd Cavaliers starting at 2 p.m. at Immaculata.

<who>Photo Credit: Lorne White/KelownaNow </who>Quarter-final play will follow beginning at 5:15 and 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

The championship and consolation draws resume on Saturday at 9 a.m, with the semifinals scheduled for 11:45 a.m. at Immaculata and KCS. The bronze-medal match goes at 5 p.m. and the championship at 6:30 p.m.

OKM Huskies winless on home court

The host Okanagan Mission Huskies couldn’t take advantage of home court on opening day of the B.C School Sports senior AAA girls volleyball championship tournament.

Ranked 11th prior to the 16-team provincial event at OKM, the Huskies lost all three matches in pool play. They fell to No. 1-ranked Brooks Thunderbirds of Powell River 25-18, 25-14, to the No. 7 Crofton House Cougars of Vancouver 25-20, 25-19 and to the No. 13 Clayton Heights Night Riders of Surrey 25-23, 25-17.

Things won’t get any easier for the Huskies in the first round of the championship draw on Friday as they take on No. 6-ranked Caledonia Kermodes of Terrace beginning at 11:15 a.m. Caledonia won all three games in pool play on Thursday.

The championship and consolation draws will continue on Saturday with the bronze-medal match set for 3:15 p.m. and the championship match beginning at 4:45 p.m.
