Valley results confirm present and future bright for KSS track and field team

Kelowna Secondary School athletes ran, jumped and threw to an Okanagan Valley senior boys track and field championship in Kamloops. And if results from the up-and-comers are any indication, the Owls are poised to repeat their team title in future.

The KSS boys, led by the three-medal individual performances of Alex Taylor, Joel Aitken and Nick Cornell, finished first among 21 schools in the Valley to claim the senior boys team title with 114 points, edging out the Okanagan Mission Huskies by 14 points.

The Grade 8 Valley crown was won by the Dr. Knox Falcons, another school whose graduates move on the KSS. Third place in the Grade 8 boys teams standings went to KLO.

Taylor resumed his neck-and-neck battle with Mt. Boucherie Bears’ Jesse Benneke in the senior 100- and 200-metre races in Kamloops on Thursday, and once again nipped the West Kelowna sprinter at the wire.

As was the case at the Central Okanagan zone championships at the Apple Bowl a week earlier, Taylor finished first by 1/100th of a second (11.25) in the 100 metres while Benneke took second in 11.26. And in the 200 metres, Taylor again widened the narrow gap as he did at the zones, taking first in 22.27. Benneke was runner-up in 22.73.

Taylor added a third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.69 metres, but well below his season best of 6.25 metres. Cam Noble of OKM won the event with a jump of 6.05 metres while Dawson Swendsied of Kelowna Christian was second at 5.84.

A fourth medal went to Taylor in the senior boys 4x100 relay as he teamed up with Aitken, Will Cannan and Nathan Tonogai for third place. OKM took top spot with Noble being joined by Mason Rowson, Daniel Harsch and Alexander Gross for the gold.

Aitken also posted a trio of top-three finishes, winning the senior triple jump with a mark of 12.04 metres. His 400-metre time of 1:02.12 was good for second place while he took the bronze in the 110-metre hurdles (17.19). Ethan Callow of George Elliot in Lake Country was second in 16.82 seconds.

In the junior boys competition, future Owl Nolan Ulm, led his KLO team to first place (81 points) among 23 teams represented at the Valley competition. In the Valley girls’ competition, the KSS Owls and Kelowna Christian School Knights led the Central Okanagan with second-place finishes in the overall senior and junior standings.
