Canadian women eliminated, men advance at Australian Open

The Canadian contingent at the 2019 Australian Open has been cut in half.

Both men advanced to round three of the tournament, but the Canadian women didn’t get the results they were looking for.

Eugenie Bouchard lost in straight sets to Serena Williams, while teen sensation Bianca Andreescu put up an impressive fight, but lost in three sets to No. 13 seed Anastasija Sevastova.

Both Canadian men had a relatively easy time in their respective matches, especially Denis Shapovalov.

The 19-year-old beat Japan’s Taro Daniel in straight sets to advance to the third round where he will face the world’s No. 1 ranked player, Novak Djokovic.

Milos Raonic needed four sets to take out Stan Wawrinka in an epic match that saw all four sets go to a tiebreaker.

After dropping the first tiebreaker 7-4, Raonic won the next three 8-6, 13-11 and 7-5 to advance to the tournament’s third round.

Raonic’s next opponent is the unranked Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
