More than seven weeks after Jim Benning’s tenure came to an end, the Vancouver Canucks have named his replacement.
Patrick Allvin was officially named the 12th general manager in team history this morning, ushering in a new era for the Canucks.

The team’s president of hockey operations, Jim Rutherford is no stranger to Allvin from the duo’s time together in Pittsburgh.
"Patrik and I worked together for seven years, and I believe he will be an excellent GM,” Rutherford said.
“He has won three Stanley Cups and has experience at all levels of hockey operations. He is intelligent, works hard, makes strong decisions and I believe he will help us build a winning team in Vancouver."
The 47-year-old from Sweden has spent the past 16 seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, most recently serving as the team’s assistant GM.
He said he’s grateful and humbled for the opportunity to take on the new role in Vancouver and expressed excitement about coming to such a hockey-crazy market.
"Leading an NHL team in Canada is an honour and building a championship team in Vancouver is our goal,” Allvin explained.
“Jim has assembled a diverse and talented hockey operations group in Vancouver, and I look forward to working closely with all of them as we build a team that fans will be proud of and will ultimately compete again for a Stanley Cup."

Allvin broke into the scouting ranks as a European scout for the Montreal Canadiens from 2002-06 after enjoying a nine-year playing career as a defenceman in various leagues in North America and Europe.
After getting his start as a scout in Montreal, he was hired by the Pittsburgh Penguins as a European scout in 2006 and was promoted to the team’s head European scout in 2012.
He served in that role until 2017 before becoming the Penguin’s director of amateur scouting for four years until his promotion to assistant GM in 2020.
Allvin will be formally introduced by the organization during a Zoom media availability at 9:30 am today.
