Coyotes go 1-3 in first ever PacWest games

The Okanagan College Coyotes men’s and women’s basketball teams travelled to the island this past weekend to take on the Camosun Chargers as well as the Vancouver Island Raiders in their first ever PacWest games.

The men’s team would go 1-1 on the weekend taking down Camosun by a score of 86-71 but losing to #6 ranked Vancouver Island 103-87. The women fell by a score of 81-61 to Camosun and lost to #7 ranked VIU the next day 77-57.

During their game against the Chargers, the men lived up to the hype in a packed gym. Thanks to a 75-foot shot at the halftime buzzer, the men took a two-point lead into the break. They would not look back from there as Curtis Wilson would score 26 while grabbing 19 rebounds to secure the win.

The men came out strong again in their game against VIU but couldn’t match the firepower of the #6 team in the nation. After staying within ten points most of the way, VIU would pull ahead in the fourth. Matt Lafontaine got 20 points in a losing effort.

The women’s first PacWest game didn’t go as they wanted it to as they were down 43-27 at the half. Camosun never really let up and won handily.

The women’s had even more troubles in their next game as, by half, they were down 52-26. The second half was much better as the team was able to cut the VIU lead down to 12. Megan Blair was the leader on offense as she got 21 in the loss.

Up next the Coyotes host their first ever PacWest home games on November 16th and 17th at Okanagan College.
