Nolan Foote the hero as the CHL wins the 2019 Canada-Russia series

This year’s Canada-Russia series might have been the closest one yet.

It was so close, that after Russia won the sixth game in a shootout, the two teams needed to go to another “special shootout” to determine the series winner.

There, it was Nolan Foote who scored a pair of goals to earn the CHL a nail-biting victory over their Russian foes.

Foote’s heroics came after he had already scored a pair of big goals in regulation of game six earlier in the evening.

Needing a victory, Russia came out strong with a pair of goals from Lev Komissarov and Ilya Kruglov to take a 2-0 lead in the second period.

However, Foote scored a pair of powerplay goals less than three minutes apart to tie it up before Ryan Chyzowski added his own powerplay goal for Team WHL 90 seconds later.

In the third period, Russia struck on a powerplay of its own, as Zakhar Shablovskii tied the game at three goals apiece with just over six minutes to play.

Overtime solved nothing, which brought the game to the first shootout of the night, which was quickly dominated by the Russians, giving the visitors a 4-3 win in extra time.

With the series all tied after the final game, that brought up the “special shootout” where Foote started things with a goal for Team WHL.

After five shooters, however, the shootout was tied, which meant Foote had a chance to shoot again and the Kelowna Rockets captain made no mistake.

He deked to the forehand and buried it past Amir Miftakhov, giving the CHL the series win in thrilling fashion.

Each CHL league record one win and had one defeat against the Russians this year.
