It's about to get very hot in the Central Okanagan

The hot weather is finally set to return to Kelowna after what has been called by many a lacklustre summer.

With temperatures cooler than usual, summertime in Kelowna has been anything but ideal. But this week the hot weather is forecasted to hit the Central Okanagan with highs in the mid-30s all week long. But with hot weather comes a warning, cover up, keep hydrated and be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen if you are outside during peak hours.

The UV index will be at eight most of the week which is considered very high. With plenty of sunshine in the forecast, the UV index will be very high between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. The UV index is considered very high when it reaches eight to 10 and extreme at 11 or higher. It is very rare for the UV index to reach 11 or extreme in Canada.

In the summertime, consider doing outdoor activities such as swimming or hiking before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. Remember too that water and sand reflect UV radiation. Also, try to spend less time in the sun by finding shade.

When you are outdoors, wear clothes that cover your skin such as hats, shoes, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Protect your eyes with sunglasses that are UV rated and wear a lot of sunscreen on skin that is not covered. Your sunscreen should block both UV-B and UV-A and have an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15 or more. Be sure to reapply it every two hours or after swimming or exercising.

It can only take a matter of minutes before your skin can burn and the result could increase your risk of skin cancers, weakened immune systems and eye damage. Be sure to check the Environment Canada website for the latest UV index information and avoid outside activities during peak hours.
