Canadians advised to stay away from Hawaii

A travel advisory has been issued by the federal government warning Canadians to avoid all unnecessary travel to Hawaii as a large hurricane approaches the islands.

According to the Government of Canada, residents are being told to avoid Hawaii County due to Hurricane Madeline. The hurricane is expected to hit the big island and has been deemed a Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.

Forecasters are expecting the hurricane to either pass closely by or over the big island on Wednesday.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says residents can expect hurricane force winds, heavy rain and high surf. Canadians planning to travel to Hawaii this week should check with their airline to ensure flights are still on schedule or to rebook.
